Vickie Woodward (Shropshire Star)
Star rating: ***** Many restaurants take years to perfect their dishes, hone their style and cement their reputation.
But within weeks of opening, Mad Jacks restaurant in Shrewsbury has already staked its claim as one of the best eateries in the county town. That may seem an ambitious claim to make, especially given the high quality of the towns numerous restaurants, but the new establishment has already made a significant impact on diners.
My partner Tom and I headed to the restaurant after a hectic day at work when we fancied treating ourselves to a night out.
We had noticed the transformation going on inside the former Jesters restaurant and had been keen to check it out as soon as the new venue, run by Danny and Ann DiTella who also own the Mytton and Mermaid Hotel at Atcham, opened. The service throughout was top notch, from the person who saw us to our table and took the time to talk to us about the history of the building - despite the restaurant being fully booked - to the waitress who brought an extra spoon for my jelly starter.
It is the finer touches that can make a meal truly memorable, and the staff at Mad Jacks were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes, offering advice to other diners who requested help with their decision making.

We dined last night at Mad Jacks and couldnt believe that we were dining in a Shropshire venue. The food was delicious with many unusual and exciting combinations. How wonderful that the proprietors are offering something so different and chic to benefit our dining out opportunities in Shrewsbury. The decor is stunning and as up to the minute as the trendiest of city brasseries. The service was very friendly. The tropical court yard is quite amazing! I enquired as to the goat skins and was informed that they are actually reindeer pelts. Intrigued by the comments of the vegitarians and being an animal lover myself i made further inquiries. Reindeer herds are humanely culled BY LAW and this is very strictly controlled by the government in lapland. The numbers of reindeer are controlled so as to preseve the welfare of the herds. Seems quite sensible to use the pelts for something if the animal was culled by order of a government! We have already booked again and would have no problem recommending Mad Jacks to our friends. Just give them a chance to settle in and hopefully we will have a forward looking up market eatery for many years to come!
